Word games have been an essential part of gaming culture for ages, but they're often overlooked by more hardcore video game players. Whether you're a casual player or consider gaming a serious hobby, there is something undeniably satisfying about playing word games. Maybe you're not a word gamer, but we hope these games inspire you to try something new. In honor of National Word Game Day, we're sharing our five favorite word games, and we welcome your input!
Scrabble Go
Scrabble is one of the most prolific games created in modern history. This game was invented in 1931 by Alfred Mosher Butts, who struggled to showcase the game's potential. After selling the rights to James Brunot, who adjusted the gameplay and changed the name, "Scrabble" began to take off. We love the Scrabble gameplay because creating high-scoring words is so rewarding. This game engages creativity and critical thinking, and its easy-to-understand rules make it accessible to countless different kinds of players. For years now, Scrabble fanatics have been able to play EA's Scrabble Go on mobile or web. Players can choose from a variety of challenges, minigames, and whether to play with others or solo.
Words with Friends
15 years ago, Words with Friends forever changed friend group dynamics by adding a layer of creativity and competition to your relationships. The asynchronous play allows users to take their time making moves and can fit the game around their busy lifestyles. Notifications during the day have made this game a fun way to stay connected to people when you can't be together in the same place. Additionally, Words with Friends provides regular updates and new features to keep players engaged while improving their vocabulary. We love this game because of its ability to foster togetherness through friendly rivalries all while stretching your brain.
Sedecordle
Sedecordle made the list because of its unique twist on the traditional word puzzle format. The gameplay promotes strategic thinking and pattern recognition, as players must balance their guesses across several words while managing limited attempts. This game is sneakily engaging and increases in difficulty levels. If you're a word game enthusiast and haven't tried Secordle, this is your sign to give it a shot. Perhaps the best aspect of this game, however, is its lack of frills, being a very straightforward, browser-based game offering daily puzzles and a only few other challenges.
Baba is You
This is TECHNICALLY a puzzle game, but since it's based on words and is extremely charming, we're counting it as a word game and you should, too. Players manipulate word blocks that function as rules to complete levels. Baba is You is one of those rare games that could make converts out of puzzle game haters. This game is simultaneously calming and challenging, and developer Hempuli Oy really brought something creative to an oversaturated genre.
This Won't Make You Happy
In the same spirit of including Baba is You, we could not leave out this silly and dark text-based game created by the brilliant minds behind The Onion and Clickhole at Serious Hats Only. This Won't Make You Happy uses humor to bring you into a more thoughtful place. This game is great for those who need to mindfully pause, and it serves as a great reset if your day isn't going the way you had planned. If you're new to text-based games, we invite you to take it slowly and embrace the weird and new journey. Play it now on KOZEE!
Wordle
It would be wrong not to list the viral sensation that is Wordle. We love Wordle because of its simplicity, making it accessible and easy to play daily. Mobile gaming is extremely crowded, and word games are everywhere. (Many of them leave a lot to be desired.) Wordle has provided tons of word game enthusiasts with a good challenge from its clutter-free interface. Wordle was acquired by The New York Times in 2022, showing its role in popular culture, and including it alongside the iconic New York Times crossword puzzle - The Crossword. Wordle is a great game if you're looking to incorporate a word game into your daily routines. It will surely give you something to talk about with others in your community, which is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this game - connectedness.
